In dental CAD/CAM system, teeth restoration produces customized tooth with a prepared cavity, while the fitting of the prosthetic tooth is firstly determined by the boundary feature of the cavity, automatic extraction of borderline of the tooth cavity is one of the important parts of dental CAD/CAM. In order to accurately extract the cavity borderline, a new 3D optimal path searching method based on Intelligent Scissors theory is presented. The main idea is formulating the 3D preparation tooth as a weighted model, then by computing the minimum weigh sum of the local cost from a start point to a goal point in the teeth cavity, after that through limiting the searching points range and searching direction, the complete borderline can be extracted accurately. The cases study results show that the algorithm produces a 3D mathematically piece-wise optimal borderline on the cavity edge, which can be used directly for teeth design, this will increase efficiency and simplify the design processes.
