Metastable bulk rhenium carbide (Re2C) has been synthesized under moderate pressure and high temperature. X-ray diffraction, Raman technology and ab initio calculations were used to determine the structure of rhenium carbide. The results show that the structure of synthesized Re2C should be a ReB2-type structure. The hardness of the bulk Re2C compound is 17.8 GPa in the asymptotic-hardness region, which can be comparable to that of ReB2, indicating that it is a hard material. The P-T phase diagram of the Re-C system has been determined in the region (P=1~6 GPa and T=873~1873 K).
