This paper studies morphological instability of core-shell nanowires composed of circularly cylindrical nanowire on which a heterogeneous epilayer is deposited coherently. A linear analysis is performed to obtain the dispersion relation analytically. It is found that the stability of the core-shell system depends on many factors, such as the radius of the core, the thickness of the epilayer as well as the competition between the surface energy and the bulk strain energy. Numerical results are shown in detail.
