Commonly, a great deal of alarms sent to the network management platform cannot ahieve the goal to help engineers locate the network faults soon and accurately as may be imagined. Why?Not all alarms indicate the real reason of fault occurred in networks. Take the EPON networks for instance.Failures on devices in the upstream of the tree topology, such as OLT off line, would trigger offline alarms from OLT as well as many alarms from the downstream, such as offline alarms from ONU and swith, which are called the derived alarms of the OLT offline alarm. The derived alarms are redundant and loads the difficulties in fault diagnose. This paper discusses several popular alarm correlation methods at present and applies one method to EPON networks based on the comparison of their features and limitations.
