In RFID systems, if a group of readers are transmitting and/or receiving signals at the same time, they will probably interfere with each other, which causes reader collision problems. They are divided into two types: reader-to-reader collision and reader-to-tag collision. In general, the reader-to-reader collision can be mitigated by maximizing the tag identification efficiency, which is related with frequencies and time slots, and can be transferred as a resource scheduling problem by optimizing the tag identification efficiency. Artificial immune system (AIS) is an emerging heuristic evolutionary method widely applied to scientific and engineering problems. This paper formulates a reader-to-reader anti-collision model based on resource scheduling and proposes an adaptive hierarchical artificial immune system (AHAIS) to solve the optimization problem. The numerical simulation results indicate that this proposed method is an effective reader-to-reader anti-collision schema. The RFID systems using AHAIS performs better in tag identification efficiency and power consumption than those using the canonical RA-GA or RA-AIS methods.
