A photonic approach for generation of triangular-shaped pulses based on optical carrier Brillouin processing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed approach, A Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) biased at the minimum-transmission-point (MITP) is used to generate an optical modulated signal with only the odd-order sidebands. And then the amplification gain provided by stimulated Brillouin scatter (SBS) is adopted to recover the suppressed carrier. Meanwhile, the negative-order sidebands of the optical modulated signal are removed by an optical bandpass filter (OBPF). By appropriately setting the modulation index, the amplitude of the 1st-order harmonic can equal to 9 times of that of the 3rd-order harmonic. In this way, triangular-shaped pulses can be obtained. In the experiment, a triangular-shaped pulse with a tunable repetition rate of 8 GHz is generated.
Keywords:Microwave photonics; Stimulated Brillouin scatter (SBS); triangular-shaped pulse.
