PURPOSE: Since serum amyloid A (SAA) has been reported to regulate angiogenesis, we searched for an association between SAA, as proinflammatory factors, and diabetic retinopathy (DR).METHODS: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) measured the concentration of SAA in vitreous fluid and plasma. Dual-color immunofluorescence staining and semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction examined the expression of SAA in the excised membranes. Multiplex bead assay measured the concentration of SAA in aqueous humor. RESULTS: The concentrations of SAA in vitreous, aqueous and plasma were significantly higher in the DR group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: SAA with the inflammatory process may be involved in the development of PDR. Local expression of SAA may exist in PDR.
