Electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique was used to fabricate hard carbon- polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite thin-film electrodes with porous structures for rechargeable lithium batteries. A suspension solution of acetylene black and PAN was used as the ESD feeding precursor. Scanning electron microscopy, AC impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic cell cycling were used to characterize these electrode films. The porosity of the films increases with the deposition temperature. Under optimized deposition conditions, the capacity of the films can be up to 350 mAh/g with excellent cycling characteristics for lithium intercalation and deintercalation. It is found that the partially oxidized PAN component has contribute greatly to the overall capacity.
Keywords:electrostatic spray deposition; hard carbon; polyacrylonitrile; composite; lithium batteries.
