Polycrystalline Bi2Fe4O9 ceramics with different crystalline sizes (30-700 nm) have been synthesized by a modified Pechini method, which were sintered at different temperatures from 650oC to 900oC, respectively. It shows that magnetic and ferroelectric properties are strongly dependent on the crystalline size. For the 30 nm samples, the magnetization curves exhibit a superimposed behavior of AFM with FM component. With increasing of the crystalline size the AFM component increases and the antiferromagnetic interactions are dominant for the samples with crystalline size larger than 400 nm. Furthermore, the Néel temperature (TN) shifts to low temperatures as the crystalline size decreases. In comparison with the 30 nm sample, ferroelectric hysteresis loops at room temperature are observed for the samples with large crystalline sizes (>160 nm) due to the reduced leakage currents. Among all samples, the 400 nm sample is found to have the smallest leakage current density (<10-6) and the largest remnant polarization (0.21 μC/cm2).
