Synergistic effects of Sb2O3 and FR-245 on flame retardant and mechanical properties of PC/ABS

A series of retardant hybrids of PC (polycarbonate) / ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) / FR-245 with and without Sb2O3 were prepared by melt blending method. The thermal stability and flame retardant properties of the hybrids were investigated by TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), HDT (thermal transition temperature), LOI (limited oxygen index) and UL94 vertical flame tests. The mechanical properties of the hybrids were investigated by mechanics performance testing machine. Synergistic effect of Sb2O3 with FR-245 was observed and combination Sb2O3 with FR-245 in the appropriate ratio enhanced the tensile, flexural and the flame retardant properties of the PC/ABS matrix. However, the notched impact strength was reduced greatly.
