Purpose - The aim of this paper is to explore the impact of different competitive strategies on the adoption of various SCI practices and their impacts on company performance simultaneously. Design/methodology/approach - A structural equation model is developed to test the relationships among competitive strategy, supply chain integration (SCI), and firm performance, based on the data collected from 604 Chinese manufacturers. Findings - The results indicate that an overall cost leadership strategy dominates in Chinese manufacturers' supply chain competition and plays the most important role in pushing companies to adopt SCI practices. The relative high importance of cost performance in improving financial performance also corroborates this conclusion. Furthermore, it is interesting to find that external integration has both a direct negative impact and an indirect positive impact on financial performance through cost and service performance. While internal integration is more important than external integration in improving financial performance, external integration is more important than internal integration in improving cost performance. Originality/value - This study provides SCI research a new perspective of strategy by linking it with competitive strategy and firm performance.
