We report and study a novel, simple, selective, and sensitive optical (both colorimetric and fluorescent) chemosensors for detecting Al3+ based on transmetalation reactions (metal displacement or exchange reactions) of a Cu(II) Salen-based Schiff base complex. For this complex-based chemosensor, both colorimetric detection and fluorescence detection had an excellent selectivity and selectivity to Al3+. A good linearity (R2 = 0.989) of the fluorescence intensity as the function of the Al3+ concentration between 0 and 1.0×10-5 mol dm-3 was established with an excellent limit of detection of 0.92 ppb.
