In this study, the iridoid glycoside aucubin from the seeds of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv and its aglycone aucubigenin have been determined for their in vitro antioxdant and antimicrobial activities. 2,2-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, superoxide anion radical, and hydroxyl radical, were established to invested the antioxdant activities. The antimicrobial activities of aucubigenin and aucubin were also determined by the disc diffusion method. The results showed for the first time that the two compounds exhibited significant differences in antioxdant activities. While aucubin exhibited no antimicrobial activity, aucubigenin exhibited considerable antimicrobial activity against all of the tested bacteria.
