Oxygen glow discharge has been used for treatment of Pd/HZSM-5 catalyst in order to investigate the catalyst reduction mechanism during gas discharge treatment. XRD and XPS characterizations demonstrate that the catalyst treatment using oxygen glow discharge leads to a reduction of Pd ions. This suggests that the electronic effect plays an important role in the treatment of catalyst using glow discharge. A highly durable catalyst for methane combustion has been obtained from the calcination of the glow discharge treated sample. The present investigation further confirms that the glow discharge treatment followed by calcination can lead to an excellent catalyst preparation with high dispersion, excellent low-temperature activity and enhanced stability for methane combustion catalytically.
