Dy3+ doped zirconia with monoclinic and tetragonal crystal structures have been prepared by a sol-gel method with ammonia. The influences of sintering time, reaction temperature, and the concentration of Dy3+ on the structure of the zirconia have been investigated. The photoluminescence properties of Dy3+ in zirconia with different structures were comparatively studied. Dy3+ ions can act as luminescent probe to study the crystal structure of zirconia by different splitting of emission peaks.
