Abstract:The boundary-layer flows of non-Newtonian power-law fluids adjacent to a stretching plane surface driven by an outer power-law shear in the presence of suction or injection are investigated. The boundary-layer equations are reduced to an ordinary differential equation with algebraical boundary condition at far field. A number of solutions with algebraical decaying behaviour are captured numerically. It is found that such solutions are possible if and only if fw ≥fw min for properly given values of α and β. We further notice that for properly prescribed values of fw and α, solutions can always be found in the range 0≤β≤βmax, where βmax corresponds to lim n→0 f''(η)=0. Besides, it is found that in the range -1/2<α<0, both the suction and the injection solutions could be available. While when -1<α<-1/2, only the solutions of suction type are possible. Furthermore, it is found that no solution is possible when the wall stretching is applied to the porous wall in the case of α=-1.

Abstract:The steady mixed convection boundary-layer flow adjacent to a symmetrical wedge in a stablestratified medium is investigated. An similarity solution if found to be in existence with the assumptions that the surface and the ambient temperature are proportional to x 2m-1 from the leading edge of the surface. A further analysis shows that the similarity method is only valid for m=1/2. Besides, analytical approximationswith high accuracy are given and then match by the numerical techniques. Further, it is found that the homotopy-pade approximations are independent on the auxiliary parameters in HAM theory. Besides, the effects of important physical parameters such as λ, Pr and S on the flow are investigated. It is foundthat the thermal stratification delays the fluid motion in the boundary-layer.

Abstract:In this paper, the (2+1)-dimensional generalization of shallow water wave equation which can be used to describe the propagation of ocean waves is analytically investigated. With the aid of symbolic computation, we prove that the (2+1)-dimensional generalization of shallow water wave equation has the Painlev'e property under a certain condition and apply the singular manifold method to constructing its Lax pair. Based on the obtained Lax representation, the Darboux transformation is constructed. The first iterated solution, second iterated solution and an N-soliton solution with an arbitrary function are derived with the resulting Darboux transformation. Relevant properties are graphically illustrated, which might be helpful to understanding the propagation processes for ocean waves on shallow waters.

Abstract:Volterra lattice can describe the Langmiuir waves in plasma dynamics. In this paper, Volterra lattice is investigated via Darboux transformation (DT) technique. N-fold DT and conservation laws for Volterra lattice are constructed basing on its Lax representation. N-soliton solutions in terms of determinant are derived with the resulting DT. Structures of the one-, two- and three-soliton solutions are shown graphically. Inelastic interaction phenomena between/among the two and three solitons are discussed for the Volterra lattice: solitonic shapes and amplitudes have changed after the interaction.

Abstract:Burgers-type equations can describe some phenomena in fluids, plasmas, gas dynamics, traffic, etc. In this paper, an integrable hierarchy covering the lattice Burgers equation is derived from a discrete spectral problem. N-fold Darboux transformation (DT) and conservation laws for the lattice Burgers equation are constructed based on its Lax pair. N-soliton solution in the form of Vandermonde-like determinant is derived via the resulting DT with symbolic computation, structures of those solutions are shown graphically. Coexistence of the elastic-inelastic interaction phenomenon among the three solitons is firstly reported for the lattice Burgers equation, even if the similar phenomenon for certern continuous systems appears in literature. Results in this paper might be helpful for understanding some ecological problems describing the evolution of competing species and the propagation of nonlinear waves in fluids.

Abstract:Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-type equations appear in the shallow waterwaves, ion-acoustic waves in plasmas, lattice dynamics and so on. Inthis paper, the Wronskian technique is applied to investigate anonisospectral variable-coefficient KdV equation in certainnonuniform media with the relaxation effect. Multi-soliton andmulti-positon/negaton solutions for such equation are constructedand verified corresponding to the different eigenvalues of theSchrodinger spectral problem. Based on the relevant magnitude ofthe wave numbers, the solitonic interaction, such as the quasielastic interaction, coherent structure and fission/fusion, areshown graphically.

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation into sliding mode fuzzy active vibration control of cylindrical thin shells laminated with photostrictive actuators. A phenomenon that the photostrictive actuators can not induce negative membrane control forces was pointed out and a novel multi-layer actuator configuration was presented to remedy this deficiency. Due to the switching actuation and nonlinear dynamic characteristics of photostrictive actuator, sliding mode fuzzy active controller was proposed to suppress the vibration. In order to further increase the range of sliding mode to facilitate vibration suppression, the function of the optimal switching surface was derived. Continuous function was applied to replace sign function to reduce the variable structure control chattering. Numerical simulation results demonstrated that the proposed actuator configuration provided better performance and effect to shell actuation and control. It was also suggested that the proposed control strategy could effectively suppresses vibration.

Abstract:Direct Simulation of Monte Carlo (DSMC) of hypersonic shock interaction was present. Molecule models in DSMC included hard sphere, variable hard sphere and variable soft sphere. Double-cone and Edney's type IV shock interaction was selected in DSMC research. Comparisons between DSMC and experiment were also conducted. Investigation of double-cone hypersonic flow shows that three collisions models can predict the trend of pressure coefficient and standun number. The agreement between DSMC simulation and experiment is best by hard sphere collisions model. Investigation of type IV shock interaction shows that the agreement between DSMC simulation and experiment is generally good in hard sphere and variable hard sphere collisions model. But it is unsuccessfully in variable soft sphere. Both double-cone flow and type IV shock interaction simulation shows that DSMC error depend on Kn Number and models employed for intermolecular interaction. With the Kn number increasing, DSMC error is decreasing. The error are the smallest for hard sphere model in comprised with variable hard sphere model and variable soft sphere model. When Kn number exceeds8.0 ×〖10〗^(-5), DSMC error for pressure coefficient ,stanton number and scale of interaction region is controlled within 10%.(10 Points, Times New Roman)

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the finite fatigue lives of high strength steel SUS 630 H900 taking various defects under high cycle loading in two dimensions (2D) and three dimensions (3D). SUS 630 H900 steel has the extensive applications with specific fatigue features. The related defects refer to long cracks/notches as well as small cracks/notches. The small cracks/notches generally give rise to the size effect on material fatigue strengths and lives. In order to address the size effect, the characteristic fatigue length concept, accounting for the minimum representative size of polycrystalline material under cyclic loadings, is selected to correlate the fatigue lives with the average stress amplitude within the length. In this concept, the characteristic fatigue length is considered as the material intrinsic property and does not vary with the number of cycles to failure. Based on the length, The finite fatigue lives of SUS 630 H900 with various defects are predicted and partially compared with the experimental results. Through the comparison it is found that, the predicted values agree with the experimental results well.
