Abstract:The functions of stitch thread in stitched composite single-lap joints are investigated by experimental measurement and finite element (FE) simulation. Through microscopic observations, it is found that stitches severely destroyed the microstructures of laminated composites, which should have impact on the mechanical behaviors of the composite around the stitches. Digital image correlation (DIC) technique is used to measure the strain fields near the stitches when the specimens are under tensile loading. The experimental results reveal the degeneration of the mechanical properties of the composite near the stitch threads. In FE analysis, the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) is used to analyze the effect of the stitches on the strain energy release rate (SERR) for a delamination progressing along the interface between the adherends. The FE results indicate that stitches can effectively restrain the extension of the delamination between the two adherends.

Abstract:A fast, robust and accurate digital image correlation (DIC) method, which uses an efficient inverse compositional matching Gauss-Newton (IC-GN) algorithm, was recently proposed for full-field deformation measurement. As an iterative local optimization algorithm, IC-GN algorithm iteratively solves for the incremental warp assumed on the reference subset until the preset convergence criteria are satisfied. In the literature, different convergence criteria have been set for iterative optimization algorithms. However, on the one hand, stringent convergence criteria lead to increased number of iterations and lessen the computational efficiency. On the other hand, too loose convergence conditions enhance the computational efficiency but may decrease the registration accuracy. Understanding the impact of prescribed convergence criteria on DIC measurement and how to choose proper convergence criteria are therefore fundamental problems in realizing high-efficiency yet high-accuracy DIC analysis. In this paper, the convergence characteristics of IC-GN algorithm are investigated using real experimental images. The effect of various convergence criteria on the efficiency and accuracy of IC-GN algorithm are carefully examined. Recommendations are given to select proper convergence criteria for more efficient implement of IC-GN algorithm.

Abstract:Since the crack tip displacement field influences the crack paths under both fatigue and fracture conditions strongly, it is very important to develop a test method with high accuracy to measure this deformation parameter. Single-element extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) using the enrichment function to describe the crack tip singularity, which could measure the discontinuous deformation directly. Simulated images are used to verify the performance of single-element X-DIC, the measured crack tip displacement field is in accordance with the given value. Displacement fields of the compact tension specimen under pure mode I loading condition was measured. The influence to the measurement accuracy caused by the crack width, subset size and subset location was discussed. All results in this paper show that single-element X-DIC could be used to measure the crack tip displacement field with high accuracy.

Abstract:An acoustic emission technique was used to monitor the cracking behavior and fracture process of thermal barrier coatings subjected to tensile loading. Acoustic emission signals were extracted and preformed by fast Fourier transform, and their corresponding characteristic frequency spectrums and dominant bands were obtained to reveal fracture modes. Three different characteristic frequency bands were confirmed, corresponding to substrate deformation, surface vertical crack and interface delamination, with the aid of scanning electronic microscopy observations. A map of the tensile failure mechanism of air plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings was established. Using experimental data, the fracture strength and interface shear strength were estimated as 45.73 ± 3.92 MPa and 20.51 ± 1.74 MPa, respectively, which are well agreement with available results..
