Abstract:The weathering stability of wood during long-term exposure to outdoor atmosphere is an important issue. Topcoat is one of the crucial methods for protecting wood polymer substrates from environmental factors, such as solar radiation and moisture. In the present study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating was synthesized on wood surface using the hydrothermal method to improve its weathering resistance capability. Both the TiO2-coated and control wood were exposed to artificial accelerated weathering for 40 circles (nearly 1 000 h). Color measurements were conducted at intervals throughout the test period, and presented in ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*, and overall color changes (ΔE). Results show that the TiO2-coated wood had better color stability than the control wood. This demonstrates the ability of TiO2 coating to retard color change in wood. Furthermore, the stimulus and opalescence of TiO2 resulted in a whitening effect on the wood after 100 h of exposure. The compositional changes on the wood surface were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The differences in absorption intensity at 1640 and 1375 cm?1 between the TiO2-coated and control wood suggest the positive contribution of the TiO2 coating to the compositional stability of lignin during the weathering aging process.

Abstract:To study the effect of sample width on flame spread characteristics, a series of laboratory-scale experiments were conducted employing eucalyptus wood with width from 3 to 7 cm. Flame dimension, flame spread rate and mass loss rate were obtained. The relationship between these flame spread characteristics and sample width was explored. Both the dimensionless average flame height and depth vary as the -n power of sample width. With the increase of sample width, both the flame spread rate and mass loss rate first decrease and then rise. The minimum values appear when sample width measures 6 cm.

Abstract:In this paper the characteristics of cambium and the accumulation of secondary xylem cells of fast-growing Populus×euramericana cv. '74 /76' are described using the traditional wood anatomy method during the active phase. The relationship between seasonal cambial activity and secondary xylem development are discussed. Results showed that the cambium presented a seasonal cyclical pattern of activity and dormancy. The accumulation of secondary xylem cells was closely related to the features of cambium, in particular to the layers of cambium.

Abstract:The superhydrophobic spherical-like α-FeOOH films on the wood surface was obtained from ferric sulfate and urea by a hydrothermal reaction process followed by a self-assembly of Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) monolayer. The microstructure, chemical state and composition of the products were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-rad diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Energy disperse X-ray analysis (EDX). The hydrophobic property of the treated samples was described by static water contact angles (CAs) and sliding water contact angles (SA) measurement. The stability under ambient condition and durability for corrosive liquid of the surperhydrophobic samples were also investigated in this paper. An analytical characterization revealed that the spherical-like α-FeOOH films with micro-nano structure uniformly deposited on the wood surface and OTS molecules combined with α-FeOOH films. The water contact angle of the as-prepared samples reached as high as 158 and the sliding angle was about 4 . The prepared superhydrophobic wood surface still maintained the superhydrophobic property when stored under ambient condition for three months or immersed in a sodium hydroxide solution of pH 12 and a hydrochloric acid solution of pH 2 for 2 hours at room temperature.

Abstract:In this paper,a suit of wood-based composite nondestructive virtual instrument system based on Labview was designed. The sample of poplar Laminated Veneer Lumber was used to discuss the feasibility of the applications of virtual instrument in the wood-based composite nondestructive test. The main results are as follows: the longitudinal resonance elasticity modulus that was measured by virtual instrument can be the token of conventionality static elasticity modulus and FFT because they had prominent correlation under the level of 0.01.
