Abstract:Traditional medicinal plants are widely used as immunomodulatory medicines that help improve health. Fifty different plants used for the treatment of toxicity were screened for their in vivo anti-inflammatory effects. Flies were either fed a standard cornmeal-yeast medium (control group) or the standard medium containing medicinal plant extracts (experimental groups). Assessment of survival rate was performed by feeding flies a vial containing five layers of filter paper hydrated with toxic compounds. Gut epithelial cells were analyzed for cell proliferation and death by GFP antibodies and 7-aminoactinomycin D (7-AAD) staining under the microscope. The expression of antimicrobial peptides was evaluated by quantitative RT-PCR. The results showed that after feeding the flies with toxic compounds, aqueous extracts from Codonopsis pilosula, Saussurea lappa, Imperata cylindrical var. major, and Melia toosendan increased fly survival rate, promoted the expression of antimicrobial peptide genes, reduced epithelial cell death, and improved gut morphology. However, we did not observe that these extracts increased SDS (Sodium dodecyl sulfate)-induced cell proliferation in vitro. These results indicate that strong anti-inflammatory effects in extracts of C. pilosula, S. lappa, I. cylindrical var. major, and M. toosendan on Drosophila intestinal cells among 50 medicinal plants. | |||

Abstract:Colour polymorphism is a common phenomenon in many groups of insects. This phenomenon allows adaptation to different environments, and is also one of the main reasons for synonymy in insect taxonomy practices. The scorpionfly Panorpa liui Hua is a widespread species in the northeastern region of China, with a typical yellowish-brown body and ground colour of wings. However, a black-bodied Panorpa (melanic morph) and a black-tailed Panorpa (intermediate morph) are frequently encountered sympatrically with the typical brown morph of P. liui, to which they are very similar in appearance. Geometric morphometric analyses were conducted on the variation of the right forewing shape with P. changbaishana and P. jilinensis as reference species. The results show that the wing shapes of the intermediate and melanic morphs are very similar to and difficult to separate from that of the typical morph of P. liui based on the canonical variance analysis, between-group PCA (principal component analysis) and the PCA. The partial Procrustes distance between the melanic morph and the typical P. liui is the smallest, indicating that they are the most similar on wing shape. The melanic morph and the intermediate morph are nearly the same on wing size, and larger than the typical morph of P. liui. Differences in wing morphology are described for these three morphs and indicate that geometric morphometric analyses of wing characters accurately classify individuals of the unknown specimens and can reliably discriminate between colour polymorphism groups in specific level. The reason of colour polymorphism and its possibility of causing synonyms in taxonomy are briefly discussed. | |||

Abstract: B-biotype Bemisia tabaci have documented very strong ability on host utility and resulted in quite wide host-range, which was regarded probably due to effective detoxified enzymes system including varied enzyme type, and carboxylesterase (CarE) might be considerable among them. In this case, the carboxylesterase activity of B-type whitefly after 48 h host transferring were tested on 56 plant species. The results indicated that OD values of CarE varied significantly, and 3.04 times difference between lowest and highest record. It was as expected that the gradient of OD value showed gradual and smooth, and host plants showed little obvious relationship between species and enzyme activity. However, data indicated that OD values of B-type whitefly from 56 plants closed to normal distribution, which might imply the exist of CarE mean activity mean and still not clear about mechanism and significance. This conclusion need more evidence to extend on other detoxified enzymes. | |||

Abstract:The following two species of the genus Condylostylus are reported from Vietnam for the first time: Condylostylus luteicoxa Parent and Condylostylus ornatipennis (De Meijere). A key to the species of the genus Condylostylus from Vietnam is presented. This genus is mainly distributed in the tropical regions and characterized by the following features: 1 strong vt arising from distinct setose mound on frons; 2-3 pairs of long acr; both sexes with 4-5 strong dc; 2 pairs of strong sc; M1 strongly bent, nearly in right angle; hypandrium often short and broad, its lateral arm reduced or absent. Condylostylus luteicoxa is characterized by all coxae yellow except mid coxa with one black outer stripe, all femora yellow except extreme tips of hind femur blackish, mid tibia apically and tarsus entirely with row of crocheted ad, and male cercus long strip-like. Condylostylus ornatipennis is characterized by all coxae black, all femora black except tips of fore and mid femora and extreme tip of hind femur, fore and hind femora with hair-like v longer than femur thickness, and male cercus long strip-like with thick base. | |||

Abstract:A new subgenus, Sinorhamphomya subgen. nov., of the genus Rhamphomyia from Palaearctic Region is discribed. One species, Rhamphomyia insignis Loew, is reported from China for the first time. The new subgenus is charaterized by the following features: male eyes contiguous on frons; female eyes widely separated on frons, frons with 6 orb; antennal scape distinctly longer than pedicel, first flagellomere much elongated, style about 1/4 as long as first flagellomere; acr irregularly biseriate, short hair-like; dc irregularly biseriate, short hair-like, 1 long posteriormost dc; prosternum with setulae on lateral parts and lower front parts; dical cell in female much elongated discal cell; anal vein reaching wing margin; male abdominal tergites 6-7 modified, each with one pair of angular lateral processes. It is distributed in the Palaearctic Region with only 1 known species. The new record species is characterized by the legs yellow except extreme tips of mid and hind femora blackish, tip of hind tibia black, and all tarsi entirely black, male cercus rather wide basally and long finger-like apically. It is distributed in China and Russia. | |||

Abstract:The mitochondrial DNA control region (mtDNA CR) has been cloned and sequenced from 56 individuals representing five species of the genus Gampsocleis. The Neighbor-Joining (NJ) tree under the Kimura 2-parameter (K2P) model, G. sedakovii haplotypes cluster into two distinct clades A and B. It suggests there may be more than one species within this group. The macropterous species, G. sinensis grouped among G. ussuriensis. Two brachypterous species, G. carinata and G. gratiosa grouped as sibling species. Individuals of G. carinata and G. gratiosa grouped together in distinct clades, even when collected from different localities. MtDNA CR structural analysis found two conserved motifs in the primary sequences "(TA)n" and "poly-A stretch" in the twelve ensiferan species examined, which may be involved in mtDNA transcription or replication control. | |||
