Abstract:a plasmonic whispering-gallery-mode cavity comprising of a semiconductor ring separated from a metal surface by a nanoscale dielectric gap is proposed and numerically investigated. The nanoscale ring resonator supports hybrid plasmonic modes with highly localized electromagnetic fields, featuring an ultra-small mode volume ~0.00129 μm3. The total quality factor is found to be limited by two mechanisms, the metal radiation loss and the absorption loss, and exhibits a tradeoff with the mode volume.

Abstract:We present here a wide-angle broadband waveplate based on a field transformation (FT) method. By adjusting the thickness of such waveplate, we obtain both half-wave and quarter-wave plates which achieve polarization conversions between TE (transverse electric) and TM (transverse magnetic), LCP (left-handed circular polarization) and RCP (right-handed circular polarization), linear and circular polarizations separately for both transmission and reflection cases. Such waveplates can be realized through sub-wavelength dielectric gratings based on effective media theory, whose performances have been verified through numerical and full-wave simulations with measurements carried out in microwave regime. In principle the proposed prototype is applicable from radio to optical frequencies.

Abstract:To prevent potential interferences from existing wireless systems including WiMAX and WLAN service, a triple band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is presented. Firstly, the band-notches in WiMAX and WLAN bands are realized by inserting a quarter-wavelength open-ended slot in the radiating patch and adding half-wavelength C-shaped strips near the feed line respectively. Then a triple band-notched UWB antenna is presented by embedding a slot in the patch and adding strips near the feed line simultaneously. Due to weak coupling between band-rejected elements, we can finely modulate any notch band by altering the relevant element without influence on others. The simulation and measurement results show that the proposed triple band-notched UWB antenna achieves a wide bandwidth with band-rejected filtering properties in the WiMAX and WLAN bands. Analysis of the approach is illustrated to verify its advantage of notch-frequency independent tunability.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a median filtering detector, which is robust against JPEG compression.Recently, the median filter has became a popular anti-forensic tool, and draws much attention in forensics. The detection of median filtering from a JPEG compressed image is a diffcult problem, because typical filter characteristics are suppressed by JPEG quantization and block artifacts. We introduce a novel forensic trace - median filter residual, which is the difference between initial image and its median filtered output. The residual effectively eliminates the interference from image edge and texture, which is regarded as a major limitation of the existing forensic methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method is very robust to JPEG post-compression, and achieves much better performance than the existing state-of-the-art works.

Abstract:A high-energy THz-wave output has been experimentally demonstrated with terahertz-wave parametric oscillator based on surface-emitted configuration. Through optimizing the cavity length and pump beam size, the maximum THz-wave output energy of 854nJ/pulse was obtained at 1.62THz with the conversion efficiency of 5.7×10-5, corresponding to the photon conversion efficiency of 0.99%. The THz beam profile is measured with THz imager, and it has a Gaussian profile. The measured beam diameter sizes were 423μm and 258μm in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The wide tunable range from 0.75 to 2.81 THz was realized.

Abstract:In this paper, a universal and efficient algorithm of domain decomposition finite difference time domain (DD-FDTD) is presented for the analysis of electromagnetic fields and microwave structures. The proposed algorithm can not only be used to analyze very complicated microwave structures but also be used to analyze sparse multi-domain electromagnetic fields. The algorithm can greatly increase the accuracy of numerical simulations and save computation time and memory space. Moreover, by combining the DD-FDTD method with a numerical thru-line (TL) calibration technique, an efficient hybrid algorithm is developed for the accurate parameter extraction of microwave circuits and structures, such as substrate integrated circuits (SICs). The SICs that are studied in this work are based on substrate integrated waveguides (SIW) which are useful for the design of millimeter-wave planar circuits such as filters, resonators and antennas.

Abstract:This work presents a wide and sharp stopband substrate integrated waveguide bandpass filter. Non-physical cross-coupling provided by higher modes in the SIW cavities is used to generate the finite transmission zeros for improved stopband performance. The design of SIW filters requires full wave electromagnetic simulations and extensive optimization. If a full wave solver is used for optimization, the design process is very time consuming. Using space mapping method, the optimization goal is to shorten the design cycle by using a fast but less accurate simulator (coarse model) to gain the information about the optimal parameters setting of the expensive but accurate simulator (fine model). To obtain the optimal design for the fine model, the space mapping technique compares the results of both models and modifies the parameters of fine model gradually. If the misalignment between the fine and coarse models is not significant, the algorithm automatically reduces the differences until the misalignment is reduced to acceptable limits. A fourth-order filter with a passband of 12-12.5GHz is fabricated on a single layer Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate. The return loss is bigger than 17.4 dB in the pass band and the insertion loss is more than 40dB in the stop band. The stopband is from 2 GHz to 11 GHz and 13.5 GHz to 17.3 GHz.?????

Abstract:A photonic approach for generation of triangular-shaped pulses based on optical carrier Brillouin processing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed approach, A Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) biased at the minimum-transmission-point (MITP) is used to generate an optical modulated signal with only the odd-order sidebands. And then the amplification gain provided by stimulated Brillouin scatter (SBS) is adopted to recover the suppressed carrier. Meanwhile, the negative-order sidebands of the optical modulated signal are removed by an optical bandpass filter (OBPF). By appropriately setting the modulation index, the amplitude of the 1st-order harmonic can equal to 9 times of that of the 3rd-order harmonic. In this way, triangular-shaped pulses can be obtained. In the experiment, a triangular-shaped pulse with a tunable repetition rate of 8 GHz is generated.

Abstract:Target tracking is one of the broad applications of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). Sensors of UWSNs are battery-powered and it is impracticable to replace the batteries when exhausted. That means the batteries life affecting the lifetime of whole networks. So, it is worth reducing the energy consumption on the premise of satisfactory tracking accuracy. This paper proposes an adaptive sensor scheduling scheme that implements for accurately and energy-efficiently tracking a maneuvering target detected by underwater UWSNs. This scheme employs multi-sensor to achieve the tracking task. And a priori criterion is presented to select the best sensor group and best fusion sensor from candidate sensors. The criterion is generated from the algorithm combining interacting multiple model with extended Kalman filters (IMM-EKF). For reducing the energy consumption, the sampling interval is variable at each time step, according to a pre-given tracking accuracy thresthold. Simulation demonstrates that selecting best sensor group can improve the tracking accuracy significantly; selecting best fusion sensor and appropriate sampling interval can reduce the energy consumption significantly.

Abstract:The one-step leapfrog alternating-direction-implicit finite-difference time-domain (ADI-FDTD) method is reformulated for simulating general electrically dispersive media. It models material dispersive properties with equivalent polarization currents. These currents are then solved with the auxiliary differential equation (ADE) and then incorporated into the one-step leapfrog ADI-FDTD method. The final equations are presented in the form similar to that of the conventional FDTD method but with second-order perturbation. The adapted method is then applied to characterize (a) electromagnetic wave propagation in a rectangular waveguide loaded with a magnetized plasma slab, (b) transmission coefficient of a plane wave normally incident on a monolayer graphene sheet biased by a magnetostatic field, and (c) surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagation along a monolayer graphene sheet biased by an electrostatic field. The numerical results verify the stability, accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed one-step leapfrog ADI-FDTD algorithm in comparison with analytical results and the results obtained with the other methods.
