Abstract:Cucumber fruit growth curve was monitored and fruit samples were harvested at four developmental stages: Immature (3-8 DAA), Mature (9-16 DAA), Breaker (17-22 DAA), Yellow (35-40 DAA). Electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide anion radical (O2.-) production rate and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content increased with fruit development. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) consistently increased with advancing fruit maturity and catalase (CAT) displayed a single-peak at Mature period. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) declined but were activated in Yellow fruit. Monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) declined and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) increased during fruit growth. However, dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) was depressed in Yellow fruit. Ascorbate (ASC) dramatically accumulated and its redox state elevated, while glutathione (GSH) degraded and its redox state declined. Results suggested that enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidation mechanisms were involved in the regulation of the development of cucumber fruit. | |||
