Abstract:The orthogonal interferometer based on 1/8 wave plate generates orthogonal signals by optical configuration. It is widely applied to interference system because of simple optical path and passive demodulation scheme for easy operation. But in the process of demodulation, the DC component of the signal needs to be eliminated. Because of the instability of light source and optical structure, the DC component of the signal may change over time. Therefore the circuit subtracting a constant can not thoroughly eliminate the DC component, causing the demodulation results are inaccurate. A improved demodulation algorithm is proposed in this paper. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that, the demodulation method is almost not affected by the size of the DC component. When small deviation in DC component occurs, the demodulation results keep stable and accurate.

Abstract:This paper gives out two kinds of novel stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) mediums with excellent quality and superior performance, FC-43 and FC-70. The SBS parameters of FC-43 and FC-70 are calculated and measured. Both of these two mediums have the properties of lower absorption, higher optical loads and short phonon lifetime. The shortest pulse width achieved by SBS compressor was 235 ps for FC-43 and 175 ps for FC-70, and the highest energy reflectivity was more than 80% in both mediums. The stability of compressed pulse was studied. When the energy of input laser pulse was 300 mJ, the compressed pulse width was between 235 ps and 355 ps for FC-43, with a fluctuation range of 100 ps and an average width of 280 ps. And for FC-70, the compressed pulse width was between 175 ps and 235 ps with a fluctuation range of 60 ps and an average width of 200 ps. The compression efficiency and stability of FC-70 is better than FC-43, indicating FC-70 is more suitable to be used as the SBS medium to generate hundred-picosecond pulses.

Abstract:MgXZn1?XO nanofibers with different doping concentration were prepared by atom layer deposition (ALD) using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) nanofibers as template. The influence of Mg doping concentration on the structure and optical properties of composite nanofibers were investigated. The samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM),ultraviolet visible(UV-vis)absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The morphologies of all the samples were not changed while the diameter of MgXZn1?XO-PVP composite nanofibers became larger after doping. With increasing Mg doping concentration, the absorption edge shifted to larger energy side, revealing the band gap tunability of MgXZn1-XO nanofibers. Meanwhile, a significant blue shift of the UV emission peak from 377nm to 362nm was observed in PL spectra. Compared with ZnO-PVP composite nanofibers, the UV emission intensity of MgXZn1?XO-PVP composite nanofibers were much stronger.

Abstract:A single molecule localization method taking advantage of stochastic photobleaching has been brought out to improve the confocal fluorescence microscopy's resolution. By detecting the stochastic intensity loss of fluorophores, each fluorophore in the field can be localized. When all locations are known, a sub-diffraction image can be retrieved through single molecule localization algorithms. A confocal scheme is used to record the bleaching process of the sample. Each fluorophore can be localized from the recorded streaming followed by image subtraction. Compared with other single molecule localization concepts such as stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) and photoactivated localization microscopy (PALM), this method does not require a laser cycling equipment and the pixel size is no longer limited by the size of CCD.It works well with standard fluorescent dyes and proteins which are easy to be photobleached.

Abstract:We have designed and built a time-gated continuous wave stimulated emission depletion (time-gated CW-STED) nanoscopy to visualize micro-structures beyond the diffraction limit. An off-line time-gated detection was performed by the help of time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) technique. Experimental results showed that before time-gating the resolution of our system was about 75nm with depletion beam (592nm) power of 200mW. By using off-line time-gating, the resolution was further improved to 38nm. Detailed principles of time-gated CW-STED were discussed in the text. Time-gated STED provides a better resolution with finite laser power.

Abstract:The theoretical and experimental study of an optical coupling system for coupling a fundamental-mode laser into a single-mode fiber is presented. Two different methods are introduced to design the system. First, the software of Tracepro based on geometric optics is used to design the proper optical coupling system. Second, the method of q parameter and ABCD law is employed to provide the optimal parameters of the optical coupling system. A simple optical coupling system is employed to couple the He-Ne 632.8 nm laser into a 9/125 μm single-mode fiber. A high coupling efficiency of 90% is obtained. Comparing these theoretical results with the experimental results, it is known that the method of q parameter and ABCD law with lens thickness considered is more appropriate to designing the coupling system because the theoretical coupling efficiency is very close to the experimental value. The further calculation indicates that the optical coupling system used in the experiment is suitable for most of fundamental-mode lasers with different wavelengths, waist sizes and M2 factors.

Abstract:A prominent application of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is pulse sequence compression for obtaining high power and high intensity optical pulse. The characteristics and the stability of the compressed Stokes pulse were investigated using compact two-cell SBS phase-conjugation mirror. FC-770, having low absorption and high breakdown threshold at the wavelength of 1064nm, was used as the SBS medium. Both the Stokes pulse width and the reflectivity were measured as a function of incident pump energy. In our work, a 8 ns laser pulse of 1064 nm generated by Q-switched Nd: YAG was optimally compressed to 116 ps for pump energies of 310 mJ, while the energy reflectivity is above 85%. The shortest pulses width obtained exhibit 99 ps duration. The stability of the temporal pulse widths after compression was investigated statistically. For non-optimal pump energies pulse widths become larger and the stability is found to decrease.

Abstract:Based on the Fresnel diffraction integral, the analytical expression for the propagation of off-axis vortex beams with topological charge ±1 through a single slit diffraction is derived, which is used to study the propagation of central phase singularity of off-axis vortex beams diffracted by a single slit in detail. The effect of propagation distance, the half-width of a single slit, off-axis parameter on position of central phase singularity in the diffracted field is illustrated by numerical examples. The results show that the off-axis vortex beam passing through a single slit diffraction, the spatial distribution of phase singularities depends on propagation distance, the half-width of a single slit and off-axis parameter. The results obtained in this paper would be useful for a deep understanding of the propagation of off-axis phase singularity in the diffracted field.

Abstract:The entanglement (measured by negativity) evolution and the non-Markovianity for the dynamical process of a spin-S system embedded in dephasing environments are studied. The exact analytical solution is presented which shows that the decoherence function governs the evolutions of coherence, entanglement and the non-Markovianity of the correspondingdynamical processes. For Ohmic and sub-Ohmic reservoirs, the negativity decreases monotonically in time and the corresponding dynamics is Markovian. While for sup-Ohmic reservoirs with non-monotonic decoherence function, the negativity appears the phenomenon of revivalsand the corresponding dynamics is non-Markovian. The relation between non-Markovianity and the system dimension is studied.

Abstract:A plasmonic random laser is achieved using gold-silver bimetallic porous nanowires with abundant nanogaps which provide strong feedback or gain channels for coherent lasing from dye molecules. The strong confinement of nanogaps allows the bimetallic porous nanowire-based random laser pumped by ns pulse to operate well with a very low threshold and extremely low concentration of Rhodamine 6G (as low as 0.067 mM). And such random lasing can be used as pumping source of another coherent random laser with oxizine. These results open the door to studies of coherent random lasing pumped by another random laser.
