Abstract:We mainly investigate four generated four-wave-mixing (FWM) signals, second- and fourth-order fluorescence (FL) signals simultaneously in a cascade three-level atomic system of sodium, in which the dual-electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows are used to enable the transparency of the generated FWM signals. The moving and immobile two-photon dressing effects on the FWM and multi-order FL signals as well as the interaction of dressing effects are studied. Furthermore, we investigate the spontaneous parametric FWM (SP-FWM) signal and spatial images of the transmitted probe signal modulated by cross-Kerr nonlinearities effect of dressing field both experimentally and theoretically. The study may find applications in all-optical control.

Abstract:The second-order interference with photons of different colors in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer is studied in Feynman's path integral theory. It is concluded that there is two-photon interference for photons of different colors if the detection system can not distinguish them in principle. The second-order temporal beating can be observed when the mean frequencies of the superposed photons are different. It is a direct result of that measurement in quantum mechanics is dependent on the measuring apparatus.

Abstract:The field screening effects in small-size GaAs photoconductive antenna are investigated via the well-known pump and probe terahertz (THz) generation technique. The peak amplitude of the THz pulses excited by the probe laser pulse as a function of the pump-probe time delay is measured. An equivalent-circuit model is used to simulate the experimental data. Based on the good agreement between the simulation and experiment, the time behavior of the radiation and space-charge fields is simulated. The results show that the space-charge screening dominantly determines the device response in the whole time, while the radiation filed screening plays a key role in initial time which strongly affects the peak THz field. The parameter analysis is performed, which may be valuable on the optimum design for the antenna as a THz emitter.

Abstract:Via constructing a special terahertz (THz) time domain spectroscopy system in which two femtosecond (fs) laser pulses are used as probe pulses to excite a photoconductive THz detector, the time behavior of the current from the detector is measured. The corresponding theoretical analysis is performed by the use of a well-known equivalent-circuit model. When the time domain current is transformed to frequency domain, an oscillation effect is observed. The oscillation frequency is decided by the time delay between the two probe pulses. The number of the extrema in the frequency domain current curve is proportion to the pulse interval in 0.1~2THz. A method to measure the interval of fs laser pulses is proposed.

Abstract:Based on the Fresnel diffraction integral and Fourier transform, the analytical expression for the propagation of off-axis elliptical vortex beams in free space is derived, which is used to study the intensity distribution and propagation of phase singularity by numerical simulation. The results show that the intensity distributions of beams change significantly while propagating. Position and number of phase singularities are dependent on the vortex position at the source plane, propagation distance and topological charge number. This research is useful for a deep understanding of the propagation of off-axis phase singularity, and provides guidance for the beam aligning. ?

Abstract:Under investigation in this paper is a $(3+1)$-dimensional coupled nonlinear Schr"{o}dinger system, which describes the dynamics of solitons formed by the pulse envelopes respectively along the orthogonal fast and slow birefringence axes in the bulk Kerr and saturable media in nonlinear optical fibres. Via the symbolic computation and Hirota method, analytic bright one- and dark one-soliton solutions for such a system are obtained. Graphic description of the soliton properties is illustrated. Through the analysis on bright and dark one-soliton properties, it can be found that the bright soliton amplitude and dark soliton width depend on the index of refraction: when the value of the index of refraction increases, bright soliton amplitude become larger and dark soliton width become larger.

Abstract:From a quite general Lindblad-like master equation of open two-level systems (qubits), we study the effect of Lamb shift to the non-Markovian dynamics. We find that the Lamb shift can induce a non-uniform rotation of the Bloch sphere, but does not affect the non-Markovianity of the open system dynamics. We determine the optimal initial-state pairs that maximize the backflow of information for the considered general dynamics and find an interesting phenomenon--the sudden change of the non-Markovianity. We relate the dynamics to the evolution of Bloch sphere to help us predicting or explaining the obtained results.

Abstract:In optical interferometric measurement, Zernike polynomials are the well-known method for the wavefront reconstruction, which are usually used in the single field point. The corresponding Zernike terms are not true wavefront aberration functions because of lack of field parameters. The Bi-Zernike polynomials are proposed to express the wavefront aberration function. The field and pupil parameters are separated and described respectively by orthonormal Zernike polynomials. Meanwhile, the orthogonality of Bi-Zernike polynomial function is proved and the numerical simulation for Bi-Zernike aberration term characterized by pupil dependence is shown for visualization. Further, the coefficients of the Bi-Zernike functions are the linear combination of W-coefficients of the power series expansion of wavefront aberration function, which can be used to balance aberration. Besides, the modified wavefront aberration function expressed as the combination of Bi-Zernike polynomial functions can be equivalently transformed to the Robert Gray's analytic expression form.

Abstract:A theoretical study of free space coupling to high-Q whispering gallery modesboth in circular and deformed microcavities are presented. In the case of acircular cavity, both analytical solutions and asymptotic formulas arederived. The coupling efficiencies at different coupling regimes for cylinderincoming wave are discussed, and the maximum efficiency is estimated for thepractical Gaussian beam excitation. In the case of a deformed cavity, thecoupling efficiency can be higher if the excitation beam can match theintrinsic emission well and the radiation loss can be tuned by adjusting thedegree of deformation. Employing an abstract model of slightly deformedcavity, we found that the asymmetric and peak like line shapes instead of theLorentz-shape dip are universal in transmission spectra due to multi-modeinterference, and the coupling efficiency can not be estimated from theabsolute depth of the dip. Our results provide guidelines for free spacecoupling in experiments, suggesting that the high-Q ARCs can be efficientlyexcited through free space which will stimulate further experiments andapplications of WGMs based on free space coupling.
