Abstract:The one-step leapfrog alternating-direction-implicit finite-difference time-domain (ADI-FDTD) method is reformulated for simulating general electrically dispersive media. It models material dispersive properties with equivalent polarization currents. These currents are then solved with the auxiliary differential equation (ADE) and then incorporated into the one-step leapfrog ADI-FDTD method. The final equations are presented in the form similar to that of the conventional FDTD method but with second-order perturbation. The adapted method is then applied to characterize (a) electromagnetic wave propagation in a rectangular waveguide loaded with a magnetized plasma slab, (b) transmission coefficient of a plane wave normally incident on a monolayer graphene sheet biased by a magnetostatic field, and (c) surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagation along a monolayer graphene sheet biased by an electrostatic field. The numerical results verify the stability, accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed one-step leapfrog ADI-FDTD algorithm in comparison with analytical results and the results obtained with the other methods.

Abstract:In this article, one distributed circuit model for the on-chip single interconnect will be introduced at first, where all the lumped elements are frequency-independent and can be directly obtained from its geometrical and physical parameters. This ensures proper scalability of the model parameters because no optimization tuning or fitting for them is involved. Some popular and low-cost techniques, such as patterned ground shield (PGS) structures for suppressing the substrate loss of silicon substrate at high frequencies and differential signal transmission are also addressed here. Then, electromagnetic modeling of on-chip coupled (a)symmetrical interconnects will be performed, including all distributed parameters. The average power handling capability (APHC) of on-chip interconnects and even thin-film microstrip lines (TFML) are also addressed here. Finally, the electrothermal analysis of multilevel interconnects under electrostatic discharge (ESD) stress will be reported using the time-domain FEM.

Abstract: Swiss rolls, consisting of a helically wound metal/dielectric laminate tape are utilized to achieve a novel ultrathin metamaterial absorber (MA) with a thickness of only about less than two percent of the incident wavelength. An intense magnetic resonance happens accompanied by strong absorption efficiency above 95% for both the TE and TM incident waves at the resonant frequency with the incidence angle up to 45 degree in the full-wave simulation. Samples have been fabricated to verify the performance of the MA for normal incidence using the TEM cell.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, fabrication, and measurement of an active frequency tunable metamaterial absorber in microwave frequency band. The unit cell of the metamaterial absorber consists of a metallic strip on the top layer of the fully grounded dielectric substrate, with a varactor loaded at the slit in the middle of the central strip. Simulation and measurement results show that by tuning the bias voltage applied on the varactors, the peak absorption frequency can be tuned about 0.44 GHz with the peak absorption greater than 95% at X band. Field analysis reveals that the unit cell of the absorber works as the microstrip resonator which exhibits matched input resistance to the incident waves.

Abstract:A novel six-port differentially fed microstrip integrated-antenna-filter is proposed. The fundamental TM01 mode of the H-shaped patch antenna is excited at 5GHz and the open-ring resonator filter is excited at 1.3GHz. It is found that the differential mode response of the antenna and filter are reasonable with good cross polarization and common mode suppression. In order to miniaturize the circuit size of system-on-package devices and meet the demand of differential operation in RFICs, the mutual coupling between the two components are investigated.

Abstract:A novel Substrate Integrated Artificial Dielectric (SIAD) power/ground layer (SIAD-PL) is designed with wideband mitigation of the simultaneously switching noise (SSN) almost from 2.0GHz to 9.5GHz (over -30dB). The SIAD-PL is designed by periodically embedding metal rods into the substrate between power plane and ground plane. The SSN suppression of SIAD-PL is predicted by the dispersion diagram and the equivalent circuit model established by model decomposing and transmission-line matrix method. The excellent Noise mitigation performance is validated by simulation and modeling. Good agreement is observed.

7. A High Resolution X/Ku Band Frequency Synthesizer

Abstract:This paper presents a high resolution X/Ku band frequency synthesizer based on a direct digital synthesizer (DDS) driven phase locked loop (PLL). The DDS, adopted as the reference of the PLL, has a frequency step of 1Hz and a typical phase noise of -140dBc/Hz at the offset of 10KHz. Its fine frequency step enables the synthesizer to have a high resolution at X/Ku band, while the phase locked loop combined with a mixer at half frequency of output signal realizes the performance of low phase noise. A prototype of the X/Ku band frequency synthesizer is developed. Measured results shows that it has an output frequency range of 11.1GHz to 12.9 GHz, a frequency resolution as fine as 10Hz and a typical phase noise of -100dBc/Hz at the offset of 10KHz.

Abstract:In this paper, a disc-shaped power tree is constructed for optimal DC performance. Given are the entire disc area and the structure of the tree. The conductivity path number N connecting with the center point source, the radial distance ratio, the area fraction and the number of pairing levels n are free to vary. The effect for parameters on resistance is investigated and the optimal parameters are obtained. The complexity of the tree increases because n increases and a more complex structure is beneficial for flow, but there exists a modest (not maximal) complexity. In the meantime, a disc power plane is designed based on the designed disc-shaped power tree. The disc power plane has multi-functions of equidistribution, low voltage drop, compactness and wideband noise isolation while maintaining a relatively simple design of geometry. Compared with leaf vein power plane, the disc power plane based on two pairing levels has smaller resistance and voltage drop than leaf vein power plane based on the same level assembled vein tree.

Abstract:In this paper, a spider power tree design technique based on constructal theory is introduced for optimal direct current performance. The optimal configuration ratio, the optimal order, and the spider tree dimensions are obtained for optimal voltage drop and resistance. In the meantime, a spider PCB power plane based on the spider tree is developed for printed circuit board. The designed spider power plane example illustrates that the designed plane has multifunctions of low voltage drop, current contour robustness, equidistribution, compactness and effective noise isolation while maintaining a relatively simple design of geometry. The constraints are the total areas of the plane and the high conductivity paths. The degrees of freedom are configuration ratios and assembly number. High complexity is not necessarily the best solution and the optimal assembly level (complexity) is 12.

Abstract:A wide-band circularly ploarized antenna for multi-mode Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS) is proposed in this article. By introducing air layer, parasitic patch and stacked structure, the circularly polarized bandwidth is enlarged effectively. In addtion, four feeding method is adopted for suppressing the higher modes and increasing the 3dB axial ratio(AR) bandwidth. A broadband and phase shifter with 0 ,90 ,180 ,270 are analysised and designed. Simulated results show that the -10dB impedance bandwidth is up to 51.6%,which can cover the whole GNSS frequency.
