Abstract:A repeater-less Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) with 157.68km sensing range is demonstrated, using the combination of random fiber laser Raman pumping and low-noise laser-diode-Raman pumping. With optical pulse coding (OPC) and Non Local Means (NLM) image processing, temperature sensing with ±0.70 C uncertainty and 8m spatial resolution is experimentally demonstrated. The image processing approach has been proved to be compatible with OPC, and it further increases the figure-of-merit (FoM) of the system by 57%.

Abstract:In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate the polarization-driven internal modulation of the forward-pumped random fiber laser (RFL). The output power of the random lasing is found to be sensitive to the state of polarization (SOP) of the Stokes light in the loop mirror. By inserting the polarization switch (PSW) driven by the TTL signal in the loop mirror, the SOP of the Stokes light can be switched between two states, thus the lasing output can be modulated as the pulsed signal with high extinction ratio.

Abstract:The time-delay signature (TDS) properties in chaotic semiconductor ring lasers (SRLs) with mutual injection are investigated numerically. The TDS is quantified via auto-correlation function. We numerically investigate the influence of linewidth enhancement factor α on the TDS. The results show that the TDS can be efficiently concealed when the linewidth enhancement factor of SRLs is large enough, and much larger ranges of operation parameters can be continuously adjusted. Hence, for practical applications, by simply choosing mutually-coupled SRLs with larger linewidth factors, four sets of widely tunable chaos with TDS concealment can be simultaneously achieved, which is highly desirable for high speed random number generation and optical chaotic encryption system based on chaotic SRLs.

Abstract:In this article we propose a novel Raman spectroscopic sensor which employs silicon nanowire waveguides for excitation and collection of Raman signal, and an integrated micro-ring resonator as a filter. Preliminary experimental results show that the extinction ratio of the filter including the ring resonator together with the grating coupler is more than 60 dB and the total insertion loss from the laser to the detector is less than 10dB. Theoretical calculations indicate that this high stray light rejection of the filter allows the observation of Raman signal at frequency as low as 4 cm-1. By employing the evanescent field of the silicon waveguide as excitation and collection of Raman signal, along with the integration of the filter and potentially a tunable semiconductor laser and the detector, a miniaturized Raman spectroscopic sensor can be realized on SOI platform.

Abstract:In the past decade, plasmonic resonators have emerged and exploited field compression to create ultra-small mode-volume devices and to enhance light-matter interactions. We propose a ring resonator on metal substrate separated by low-permittivity dielectric, which supports hybrid plasmonic modes with highly localized electromagnetic ?eld. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to calculate the properties of the ring resonator. By changing the cavity's geometry and low-permittivity dielectric's height, high quality factor of 354 along with ultra-compact mode confinement 0.0078 (λ/2n)3 ~ 0.0001um3 is achieved, leading to Purcell factor up to 2.7 x 104. Moreover, the mode volume remains of the order of 0.01(λ/2n)3 with quality factor bigger than 100 for a ring radius and thickness in the range of nanometers. The hybrid plasmonic ring resonator exhibits a trade-off between the high quality factor and the ultra-small mode volume at deep subwavelength scale in the visible spectrum. It holds great potential in fundamental physics and applications in photonics and optoelectronics, for instance, cavity quantum electrodynamics in weak coupling regime and low-threshold lasers.

Abstract:a plasmonic whispering-gallery-mode cavity comprising of a semiconductor ring separated from a metal surface by a nanoscale dielectric gap is proposed and numerically investigated. The nanoscale ring resonator supports hybrid plasmonic modes with highly localized electromagnetic fields, featuring an ultra-small mode volume ~0.00129 μm3. The total quality factor is found to be limited by two mechanisms, the metal radiation loss and the absorption loss, and exhibits a tradeoff with the mode volume.

Abstract:A high-energy THz-wave output has been experimentally demonstrated with terahertz-wave parametric oscillator based on surface-emitted configuration. Through optimizing the cavity length and pump beam size, the maximum THz-wave output energy of 854nJ/pulse was obtained at 1.62THz with the conversion efficiency of 5.7×10-5, corresponding to the photon conversion efficiency of 0.99%. The THz beam profile is measured with THz imager, and it has a Gaussian profile. The measured beam diameter sizes were 423μm and 258μm in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The wide tunable range from 0.75 to 2.81 THz was realized.

Abstract:A photonic approach for generation of triangular-shaped pulses based on optical carrier Brillouin processing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed approach, A Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) biased at the minimum-transmission-point (MITP) is used to generate an optical modulated signal with only the odd-order sidebands. And then the amplification gain provided by stimulated Brillouin scatter (SBS) is adopted to recover the suppressed carrier. Meanwhile, the negative-order sidebands of the optical modulated signal are removed by an optical bandpass filter (OBPF). By appropriately setting the modulation index, the amplitude of the 1st-order harmonic can equal to 9 times of that of the 3rd-order harmonic. In this way, triangular-shaped pulses can be obtained. In the experiment, a triangular-shaped pulse with a tunable repetition rate of 8 GHz is generated.

Abstract:A novel and compact photonic microwave downconverter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using a single dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DMZM). The DMZM is used to simultaneously convert the input RF signal into an optical signal, form an OEO for RF carrier extraction, and downconvert the optical RF signal to the baseband. In the experiment, a 2-Gb/s NRZ coded 10.66-GHz RF signal is successfully downconverted to the baseband. In addition, a microwave receiver for wireless high-definition (HD) video transmission is built and verified based on the proposed downconverter. The experiment results confirm that the proposed downconverter has simple configuration, good downconversion performance and very stable operation.

Abstract:In this paper, Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) nanoparticles (NPs) were formed on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode by thermal annealing AZO thin film prepared using sputtering method. Polymer solar cells using ITO, ITO/AZO thin film, and ITO/AZO NPs as anodes were prepared, and it was shown that the short-circuit current and power conversion efficiency of the solar cells could be significantly improved by depositing AZO NPs on ITO electrodes. The mechanism for improving the performance of the bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells by using ITO/AZO NPs anode was systematically investigated. Our study opens up avenues for enhancing efficiency of polymer solar cells by structuring the electrodes with AZO NPs.
