Show/Hide Abstract | Cite this paper︱Full-text: PDF (0 B)
Abstract:A compact reconfigurable proximity coupled antenna with frequency and polarization switching capabilities is presented in this paper. The frequency and polarization switching capabilities are realized by using six PIN diodes across an eye-shaped slot on the ground plane. The proposed antenna has six different operation status including linear polarization (LP), right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) wave. Due to the frequency and polarization switching capabilities, the overall capacity of the antenna in the wireless transmissions could be potentially enlarged.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates that the circular antenna array with its nth element dipole phased by an accurate setting can generate the vortex radio beams possessing orbital angular momentum (OAM). Theoretical formulations of its radiation far-field are deduced in the spherical coordinate system and are used to analyze radiation pattern and phase distribution of vortex radio beams. The model of a simulated configuration for circular antenna array is proposed and conducted to validate the theoretical results using 4nec2. Simulation results match well with the theoretical analysis. Both calculated results and simulation results show vortex radio beams possess amplitude null on radiation pattern.

Abstract:To improve network throughput and energy consumption, device-to-device (D2D) communications have gained much attention. Due to low antenna heights and motion of both terminal ends, the fading characteristics of D2D channel is different from that of traditional cellular networks. An autoregressive-moving average (ARMA) model is proposed in this letter to better characterize the correlated shadow fading in D2D scenarios based on field measurements in urban areas. The ARMA model is actually an extension of the damped exponential correlation model, and could capture the key components in shadowing process.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel wideband dual-polarized antenna for 2G/3G/4G, WLAN and WiMAX base station applications. By using the curve parasitic elements and vertically-extruded square ring, wide impedance bandwidth and stable radiation patterns are obtained. Both measured and simulated results show that the proposed antenna achieves 77.5% impedance bandwidth (VSWR<2) from 1.69-3.83 GHz, with a port isolation higher than 23 dB. Moreover, stable radiation patterns with a peak gain of 7 dBi - 9 dBi, a cross polarization under -17 dB and a front-to-back ratio better than 15 dB are obtained across the operating band.

Abstract:Transient electromagnetic (EM) scattering by conductors is formulated by time-domain magnetic field integral equation (TDMFIE). The TDMFIE is important because the time-domain combined field integral equation involves it and also it appears in the time-domain integral equations of penetrable media as an operator. The TDMFIE is usually solved by combining the method of moments (MoM) in spatial domain and a march-on in time (MOT) scheme in temporal domain. This paper proposes a different approach in which a Nystr"{o}m scheme is used in spatial domain while a Galerkin method (GM) with Laguerre basis and testing functions is employed in temporal domain. The approach includes the merits of Nystr"{o}m scheme in spatial domain and also fully eliminates the late-time instability of the MOT. Moreover, the Laguerre basis function can naturally enforce the causality of signals and the GM can simplify the time-domain implementation. Numerical examples for transient EM scattering by typically-shaped conductors are presented to illustrate the approach and its robustness has been demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper,We present the design, simulation, and measurement of a polarization-independent and angle-insensitive metamaterial absorber (MA) in X-band. Since the unit cell of the MA consists of four subwavelength split-ring resonators with 4-fold symmetric rotation, the MA is insensitive to the variation of both polarization and incident angle of the planar electromagnetic wave. The electromagnetic performances of the MA are studied by full-wave simulations based on finite-element method and the Naval Research Laboratory arch experimental measurements. The electric field distributions are numerically investigated, which confirm the polarization-insensitive property of the MA, as expected from the symmetric nature of the structure. When the incident angles varies from 0 to 45 degrees, the MA remains full width at half maximum of 0.4 GHz (0.5 GHz) with peak absorptions of 99.9 % (95.2%) at 10.27 GHz (10.3 GHz) by simulations (measurements)

Abstract:Antenna array synthesis with a minimum number of antenna elements is of interest in many applications. In this work, an iterative method based on FOCUSS algorithm, for the design of sparse arrays is proposed. The FOCUSS algorithm is a weighted Lp-norm (0 < p < 1) minimization which can give the locations and excitations of sparse elements at the same time under a certain constraint. In order to balance the accuracy and speed, an off-grid model is introduced into this algorithm. Numerical simulations are presented to show the high precision and efficiency of this method to achieve the desired radiation pattern with sparse non-uniform linear array.

Abstract:A monopole antenna with modified ground plane is presented for 2.4GHz and 5GHz WLAN applications in this letter. A trapezoid patch and a quasi-fractal slotted patch are printed on two FR-4 dielectric substrates as the radiator and the ground plane of the antenna, respectively. The element of the quasi-fractal slot structure is a circular ring with 4 branches. The radiation characteristics are simulated and experimentally verified, and the results show that the proposed antenna has good radiation performance.

Abstract:Substrate integrated nonradiative dielectric (SINRD) waveguide fabricated directly on printed circuit board (PCB) or metalized dielectric layer, with its excellent performances of simplifying fabrication process and minimizing mechanical errors, is vitally essential at the microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies. In this paper, both double-layer and triple-layer transitions of coplanar waveguides (CPW) to the SINRD waveguides based on the former technique are presented, providing effective interconnects for compactly and flexibly integrating the planar-CPW-based devices with the SINRD waveguide circuits. It is found that simulated results are in good agreements with the measured results, which proves the promising future of the SINRD waveguides based on PCBs in the area of mm-wave hybrid integrated systems.

Abstract:In this letter, the microstrip antenna with square patch array on the front surface and two-dimensional photonic band gap (PBG) on the ground has been proposed. The ground etching structure can suppress the resonance of the harmonic frequencies effectively of the antenna while the square patch array can increase the gain comparing with the normal microstrip patch antenna. The simulation and measurement results of this novel antenna are illustrated. The comparison of radiation patterns between this novel antenna, the microstrip antenna only with ground etching structure and the normal microstrip antenna is also presented.
